Violent storms that left at least 16 people dead in Oklahoma and Missouri were heading towards the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Sunday, as the nation’s mid-section struggled to cope with floodwaters. At least 13 people –including nine adults, three of who were storm chasers, and four children — were killed after five tornadoes — one a half-mile wide — struck the Oklahoma City area Friday evening, terrorizing communities already battered by deadly storms this spring.

A large section of the country – from Texas across the Plains and to the Midwest – was under at least a slight risk of severe thunderstorms Tuesday, the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center said. Among the major cities in the line of fire were Kansas City, Chicago, Milwaukee and Des Moines, Iowa. Tornadoes were also possible on Tuesday with clusters of severe storms forming from the Mexico border in Texas, northward to South Dakota and eastward as far as Pittsburgh, according to weather.com.

A vast area of the central U.S. was warned to prepare for storms on Monday, after tornadoes killed one and injured 21 in Oklahoma and also hit Iowa and Kansas.
“After over 300 reports of severe weather on Sunday, another round of dangerous severe weather is expected Monday with the greatest threat once again in the southern Plains targeting Oklahoma and parts of Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas,” the National Weather Service said. “However, severe weather is possible much further north towards Chicago and Madison as well.”
