Last week, Serbia has seen an increase in average daily temperatures, which now stand at around 10 °C (50° F) in most parts of the country. This has sped up further melting of ice and snow accumulated during the cold spell of previous weeks. The snow melt has caused some material damage, most notably to a medical center in the city of Kragujevac.
On the other hand, the ice melt poses a serious threat to a whole array of communities in the vicinity of Serbian rivers. The unprecedented amount of ice on the rivers is already the reason behind huge losses of local economy – but now there are fears that floods may occur soon as well. The United Nations has issued a warning on possible immediate floods in the Danube area, especially in places where protective infrastructure is non-existent. Mr. Aleksandar Prodanović of Serbian Water Management Agency has, however, said that the floods may occur at the end of April or the beginning of May at the earliest. No matter when that happens, Serbia’s already troubled economy would be facing further problems in such a situation.
In the meantime, country-wide state of emergency has been revoked, as some amount of snow remains only on mountains and few other parts of the country. Majority of people, even those in the worst affected areas, now have access to roads and schools.
