Firefighters gain ground on Tahoe blaze

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. � A break in the wind allowed firefighters to gain ground on a stubborn wildfire near Lake Tahoe as they prepared for more blustery conditions forecast for Thursday. More than 2,100 firefighters took advantage of the calm to tame the blaze on two fronts � near the small town of Meyers to the south and on the edge of several densely populated subdivisions near the lake itself. More rain expected in central Texas

MARBLE FALLS, Texas 6.28.07 � Weary from constant downpours that have claimed 11 lives in the last 11 days, residents of central Texas braced for yet another deluge Thursday. About 3 inches of rain fell overnight in some areas, far short of the 10 inches forecast, but more was expected during the day and flash flood warnings were in effect. Almost a week of non-stop rain � including 18 inches near Marble Falls on Wednesday morning � left dozens of people stranded on rooftops, cars and in trees. Tropical cyclone kills 45 people in SE India

A tropical cyclone, India�s anticipated storm over the past few days hit land on Friday, bringing heavy rain to the south east coast. The regions largest state, Andra Pradesh received over 10 inches (254mm) of rain, more than the combined total from the monsoon so far. At least 45 people were killed by the rising floodwaters, which also damaged buildings leaving many homes without power. Read more
