Serbia Finally Sees Substantial Rainfalls

Filip     Correspondence, Data, Reports & Findings, Weather Events     0

After months of predominantly dry weather and higher-than-average temperatures, many parts of Serbia saw significant rainfalls as well as somewhat colder weather over the last week. The temperatures were close to the season average, around 20 °C (68 °F). Although some parts of the country had less precipitation than usual, heavy showers were recorded in most places. The city of Loznica, for example, saw four times the usual amount of rain.

The current wet weather is seen as very important for Serbia’s struggling agriculture. The recent rain has created near-optimal conditions for the fall planting of crops. On the other hand, this summer’s long and heavy drought caused huge losses to many people and the last week’s rainfalls came much too late. What’s more, recent storms resulted in even greater damage in many areas of the country.

Serbian waterways are also suffering from this year’s drought. Water levels on certain rivers have reached biologically critical minimums, which means that there may be consequences on the environment and the drinking-water quality.
