India begins mass cremation of flood victims, many missing

India began the mass cremation of bodies recovered after devastating floods in the country’s northern Himalayan region, government officials said on Thursday, adding that hundreds of people were still missing.
The floods, triggered by heavier than normal and early monsoon rains, have killed at least 822 people and displaced tens of thousands of inhabitants in Uttarakhand state, a popular destination for Hindu pilgrims due to its shrines and temples.

The rescue and evacuation operations were delayed in the rain-ravaged Uttarakhand early Wednesday owing to rains and dense fog in some areas, officials said.
‘After the chopper crash Tuesday, we are moving with caution to ensure that such incidents do not reoccur. We are waiting for the weather to improve,” said a senior state official.

This is what counts as good news in Colorado’s wildfire season: a breezy day but at least not three straight hours of winds blowing at 25 mph or more.
Firefighters battling the massive and erratic wildfire in the state’s southwestern mountains got a bit of a break Tuesday, with forecasters calling for winds below the threshold for a red flag warning after nearly a week of winds gusting to 50 mph

Icy storm biggest in a decade

The polar blast which roared across New Zealand was the most powerful storm in almost a decade.
The event was the right ingredients coming together, said MetService spokesman Daniel Corbett. “On Wednesday there was a surface low just to the northwest of the South Island and at the same time there was a southerly coming in with some cold air at the top of the atmosphere.
“The whole thing developed as a massive low that started to move across the west of the South Island, then [on Thursday] it moved across Cook Strait to create a new low just east of Kaikoura … that was the real kick in pants that caused a clockwise circle of wind.”

Heat Wave Bakes Heart of Europe

A withering early summer heart wave has sent temperatures soaring throughout central Europe since Monday.
Wednesday, excessive heat spread northward from the Alps to nearly all of Germany, where some hot spots topped 35 degrees C (95 degrees F). For a wide area surrounding the Alps, it was the third straight day of readings hitting 30 to 35 degrees C (86-95 degrees F).
