The situation in the Balkans region is similar to that of previous weeks – average temperatures, but little or no precipitation. The lack of rain is now a very serious issue as the water levels continue to decrease and are now extremely low. The river traffic in the region is very difficult to maintain at the moment, and this poses a serious threat to export of goods from the Balkans to other parts of Europe. That could in turn cause serious economic issues.
Last week we have also seen some light fog lingering throughout the day and therefore making road traffic difficult. On a few occasions the situation deteriorated yet further as the fog reduced visibility to as little as 30 meters (100 ft.). Some flights inbound to Belgrade airport were diverted to Niš, some 200 km (125 mi) to the south, while many more were cancelled altogether. The police have reported an increase in the number of road accidents.
Nothing was unusual as far as temperatures are concerned. The values measured last week fall within the average for November, ranging from several degrees below freezing to 12 °C (54 °F). Yet, they could have been much higher had there been less fog.
